How to...
Scan a picture at high resolution - Scanners are deferent as well as the program that comes with them so it may vary from one scanner to another but in general this is what you do. Open what ever scanner program your using and you should see a button or word in the upper left corner or upper left drop down menu that says something like scan image, acquire image, get image from..., etc. click on that. Some scanning programs automatically give you options to alter scanning information such as size, color, resolution, etc. If it does not you should be able to find and change these functions under properties which may be located in one of your drop down menus. If you have an 8x10 you can scan it at 100% of size at 300dpi. If you have a 4x5 or 5x7 you should either scan it at 200% of size at 300dpi, or you can scan it at 100% of size at 600dpi, some scanners even go up to 2400dpi but if you scan it too large it won't fit over email and may even crash your computer so I wouldn't suggest going over 600dpi. Make sure the scanner is set to scan a color image, not line art, black and white, or text. This is also found in the scanning properties. Prescan your image 1st. There should be a prescan or preview button for this. Then use your dotted square, or Marquee to select only the image you want scanned and click scan.
Scanning Problems - Make sure the glass on your scanner is CLEAN. No dust, hair, scratches, etc. It will show up on your picture.

This is a picture of a scanner corruption line. It is caused when metal prongs
in your scanner don't connect properly. They can vary in intensity depending
on the color of the picture and the only thing you can do to get rid of them
is take your scanner to a shop to have it worked on and in my experience sometime
that doesn't even work. If its not under warranty I would just buy a new scanner.
Pictures can also get corruption lines after scanning. They can be caused by computer glitches, viruses, or incomplete data transfer. These corruption lines tend to be bright green but they can range from 1 single line like you see above, to most of the image being covered, to parts of the image being shifted around to deferent places. If this happens during email just keep emailing it till it looks right. If it happens while your working on it, hope you have saved another version of it because that one is useless unless you can clone it out. Either way corruption lines are not good and everyone involved should run a virus scan on their computer.
Set your digital camera to highest resolution - Every digital camera is different but here is how to set a canon rebel to the larges picture setting. turn camera on and push the menu button, Choose quality and select large. The file should be around 5 mgs
Burn a picture to CD - There are many ways to burn pictures
to CD. Some involve using programs specifically made for burning CDs like
NERO or TOAST, but I'm going to tell you the easiest way I know. It may or
may not be available to you depending on the version of windows your running.
Open MY COMPUTER, which should be located on your desktop or under your start
menu. Then open the cd burner drive which is usually D or E. When you open
it it should be blank. Put a new burnable CD in the cd burner and close it.
Drag and drop the file you want to burn into the CD burner window you just
opened. To your left of your window, you should see a blue option pallet and
at the top of it should say "CD writing tasks" and "Write these
files to CD" Click on "Write these files to CD" and it should
open a new window. Then just follow its instructions and it will burn your
files to CD. Always check the cd after you burn it to make sure the files
are there before wasting a trip to the photo lab.
How to send a attachment over email - Open your email program. I'm using outlook express. Click the create mail button in the upper left corner. There should be a button at the top that says attach, and/or a picture of a paper clip. Click on it and find the file you want to attach. Make sure it isn't too large to send. If you have dial up I wouldn't try sending anything over 2 or 3mgs If you have high speed I wouldn't try sending anything over 7-8mgs. You also have to be aware of the speed of the persons Internet you are sending it to. Then write out the note give it a subject type in their email address and click send.
What is FTP - File Transfer Protocol, it is a site on the Internet set up specifically to transfer large file from one computer to another. In order to send and receive files from someone's ftp site you need an ftp program such as WSFTP or fetch or you can do it over the Internet if they make it available to you that way. You have to know the ftp site address such as ftp://whatever.com and the username and password and the person who runs the site will have to give you permissions to read and write to it.
